SKYWLKR - Superblunt

“Superblunt” / Skywlkr
Strawberry Cough (Bandcamp - 2010)

I’ve been a big fan of Skywlkr beats this year. He’s actually shipping his Blueberry Cough beattape today from bandcamp orders. The tape (an actual tape, for the record) boasts 47 loops and features joints that have/will be used by Danny Brown, the MA’z, Dopehead and others. This isn’t from that, but it’s my favorite beat from the companion released earlier this last year, Strawberry Cough. It’s short and sweet, and all the better.

On a somewhat unrelated note, the Dopeness has become somewhat of a de-facto beats blog this year. There’s been amazing unorthodox production for the past year or so, and a great deal coming from a lot of relative unknowns. I was thinking that it would be worthwhile to put a comprehensive set of tracks (or maybe B-Sides/ Rarities) together that would be representative of the progression we’ve seen. Which begs the question, what would you like to see on this mix?

Song/Artist: Welcome (Gotta Go) / Black Milk
Release: Album of the Year (2010)

“Welcome,” the second single off of the Black Milk’s Album of the Year, is one of the most (musically) conservative records on the album. Not so much in terms of what other people have been producing (it’s still miles away), but certainly the closest to what he was doing on 2008’s Tronic. This is by no means a slight to him, considering just how crazy Tronic was to hear at that point; What’s different on this record is that his flow is on a whole different level. He’s not the most cerebral rapper, but his word play and cadence show a dexterity rarely seen in producers who rap. Which is really the point -on Album of the Year, Milk is a producer and a rapper, and in no particular order.
