More MA’z/FZ goodness. ”I Miss Y’all” features the raw, honest, emotional core that Squadda often approaches but only really embraces in his best moments. Friendzone echoes and hightens the emotion with the evocative melodies and skittering 808’s. It’s not as developed as recent collaborations of “Chuch” and “Perfect Skies,” but the pure simplicity of the tune is what makes it work so well. The B-Side of the collaboration, “Focus” is equally worthwhile.
“Out of this World”/ASAP Rocky LiveLoveA$AP (Mixtape - 2011)
A$AP is taking his damn sweet time with this mixtape. This isn’t quite the next level stuff on “Trilla” or “Peso,” but it’s swagged out nonetheless.
Anatomy of a Beat: “Illest Alive”/Main Attrakionz p/ Clams Casino (Internet - 2010)
In the post earlier today, I mentioned the sample traffic of Björk by Clams Casino. Not so long after, the gem in question showed up on my dashboard, courtesy of loopyz. The sample choice, both shrill and haunting, borders on the cold vocal processing of The Knife.
“Bachelorette“/Björk Homogenic (One Little Indian -1997)
Anatomy of a Beat: “Chuch”/Main Attrakionz p/ Friendzone 808’s & Dark Grapes II (Bandcamp - 2011)
Along with “Perfect Skies,” Friendzone has put out two of the most lush, beautiful production jobs of the year. The sample comes from a Gigi Masin & Charles Hayward record called “Clouds.” It’s actually a pretty famous sample, appearing in records from Nujabes, Björk (who’s incidentally gotten sample traffic from MA’z collaborator Clams Casino recently) and To Rococo Rot.
“Clouds“/Gigi Masin & Charles Hayward Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre 2 (Subrosa -1989)
It had to happen sometime and Antwon probably did it for the best. He kicks demand side drug rhymes over based, chillwave and “witch-house” beats. The weird (non-trill) cousin of trillwave.
